Novelista polaco. En 1869 comenzó a publicar obras de crítica literaria marcadas por la influencia del
positivismo. Trabajó como reportero y publicó cuentos que tuvieron mucho éxito antes de producir la gran trilogía de novelas formada por
A sangre y fuego (1884),
El diluvio (
1886) y
Pan Wolodyjowski (1887–88). En ellas describe las luchas de los polacos contra los cosacos, tártaros, suecos y turcos, subrayando el heroísmo de los polacos en un estilo narrativo vivaz y de una claridad y simplicidad épicas. Su novela
Quo Vadis? (1896) ambientada en la Roma de Nerón fue traducida a varios idiomas, y sirvió para consolidar su reputación en el extranjero. Recibió el Premio Nobel de Literatura en 1905.
